Australian basketball star Andrew Bogut has been greeted with boos by Chinese fans at the Fiba Basketball World Cup taking place in China.
The Boomers played Canada in their opening World Cup game at the Dongguan Basketball Centre where Bogut’s every touch of the ball was booed by local fans, likely because of his recent comments about Chinese swimmer Sun Yang.
Bogut waded into the spat between fellow Australian Mack Horton and Sun at the world championships in South Korea last month, tweeting that “Swimmers who medal v Sun Yang should break the podium with hammers.”
That tweet upset plenty of Sun Yang fans in the 5,200 replies but the former Milwaukee Bucks big man clearly has not let it get to him.

“Wheels up to China! Can’t wait to see all my Chinese fans soon,” wrote Bogut on the team’s way to the World Cup. The accompanying emoji hinted that it was said tongue-in-cheek.
The boos in Dongguan started when Bogut entered the game and continued throughout his team’s 108-92 win over Canada.

The reigning NBL MVP, who won the NBA title with the Golden State Warriors in 2015, played his part in the victory with 12 points and nine rebounds.
This came just a day after the 34-year-old was described as touch and go to play in the opener after suffering an ankle injury.
Their victory sees them as favourites to get into the second group stage, needing only a win over Senegal on Tuesday or Lithuania on Thursday to progress.

Both of those games are in Dongguan and with many fans buying packages of tickets for all the group games there is a strong chance they will be booing Bogut again.
Bogut took it in his stride, responding to comments on Twitter and tweeting a picture of him with some Chinese fans, one of whom was holding his jersey.
Boomers coach Andrej Lemanis dismissed concerns over the booing in the Canada game, while Bogut’s teammate Chris Goulding echoed his coach’s comments.

“I don’t think it affects us at all ... there’s just general noise,” he said. “Every game you play, there’s passionate fans and, when you play the Lithuanians, they’ll have the drums and the noise ... it adds to the atmosphere of the tournament, which is fun.”
Australia are among the favourites to win the World Cup, which concludes in Beijing on September 15.
The Boomers are ranked sixth out of the 32 teams in China by the bookmakers, with the US leading the way.

The US team posted an opening game win over the Czech Republic, while NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo led Greece to victory over Montenegro, both on Sunday.
Hosts China got off to a winning start by beating Ivory Coast on Friday.
