Siobhan Haughey says having pool named after her at SCAA was not even on her ‘bucket list’
The sports club invited former coaches and members of her old swimming school to attend the naming ceremony in Causeway Bay
Siobhan Haughey said having a pool named in her honour at the Hong Kong club where she learned to swim as a child was something she “never thought possible”.
The South China Athletic Association paved the way for Haughey to become a three-time Olympian, and on Wednesday invited her former SCAA coaches, current members of the association’s swim team and students from her high school to attend the naming ceremony in Causeway Bay.
The newly named South China Athletic Association Siobhan Haughey Aquatic Centre is an outdoor 23-metre pool for swimming and diving.
“It means a lot to me because I started swimming here, and I was actually shocked when they told me that they were planning to name the pool after me because I never thought that was possible, and it was not even on my bucket list,” Haughey said.
“This is definitely a huge achievement, and the fact that they’re willing to do this for me is really special. I also got to be involved in the design of the pool as well.
“I don’t even think I can rank this in my list of achievements because this was out of what I thought was possible.”
