Karis Teetan started the new season on a winning note in Saturday’s jockeys’ sprint as he prepares for the upcoming Group One ride on rising star Mugen in Japan.
Teaming up with apprentice Ellis Wong Chi-wang in the 100m relay contest down the Sha Tin straight, the Mauritian rider overhauled Australian Brenton Avdulla late to claim his fifth success in the annual jockeys’ sprint.
Having finished second to champion Zac Purton in last term’s premiership with 86 wins, Teetan is excited about his prospects this campaign which include Mugen in the Group One Sprinters Stakes (1,200m) on September 29.
The 34-year-old has ridden Pierre Ng Pang-chi’s quality sprinter in all of his four career victories, including the Group Three Premier Cup (1,400m) in June.

“It’s very exciting,” Teetan said.
“He’s doing really well. I’ve been sitting on him in the mornings, I’m very happy with the way he’s going and I think it’s a nice trip for him.”
Teetan enhanced his reputation as the fastest jockey at Sha Tin in what was the first jockeys’ sprint since 2019, with Covid and a typhoon last year forcing the event to be scrapped.
Teetan and Wong collected a HK$5,000 cheque, trophy and medals after beating Avdulla and Jerry Chau Chun-lok.

“It’s good fun and it’s great to get everyone in racing involved,” Teetan said.
“We’re here in a competitive environment and it’s nice to get all the jockeys to let loose and have a laugh. I find it’s very good for everybody.”
While admitting he has no specific aims for the 2024-25 season, Teetan hopes to again be in the top echelon of the jockeys’ championship.
“I never put a number on it, but it would be nice to be competitive again,” he said.

“Last season was a great season and to finish off with two Group Three wins [Premier Cup and Sha Tin Vase] at the end was amazing. I just try to work hard and the most important thing is to try to get a lot of support from different stables. If I get the support, the winners will come.”
The new season kicks off at Sha Tin on Sunday, September 8.
Ka Ying Rising, a brilliant winner of the Sha Tin Vase (1,200m) under Teetan in June, warmed up for the Class One HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup (1,200m) at the season opener with a slashing second in a trial on the Sha Tin turf on Saturday night.
The David Hayes-trained sprinter finished strongly under a hold by Purton, who has been booked to ride the exciting son of Shamexpress next week.
“It was a good trial,” Hayes said. “We just wanted to teach him to relax and we’re running next week, so we didn’t need to win for nothing. All in all I was pretty happy.”
Former Australian galloper Magic Control beat home Ka Ying Rising in the trial, which was his first appearance for new trainer Cody Mo Wai-kit.
