Hong Kong’s biggest tennis event received a lift yesterday with Prudential confirming that it would sponsor the tournament for a third straight year.
The Hong Kong Open, featuring some of the top names in women’s tennis and part of the WTA tour, will take place from October 8-16 at Victoria Park.
“We would like to thank Prudential for its vital title sponsorship in 2016 and its continuous support over the last two years,” said Chris Lai, chief executive of the Hong Kong Tennis Association.
“[Their] support has allowed a continuous upgrading of the tournament and local tennis development.”

Last year’s tournament, offering US$250,000 in prize money, attracted 53 players from 24 countries and was won by Serbian Jelena Jankovic, who beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the final.
One of the biggest drawcards was former Wimbledon champion Venus Williams, who was beaten by Jankovic in the semi-finals.
Organisers failed to mention the prize money purse for this year’s event, but the HKTA will receive a HK$2 million boost from the government’s Mega Events Fund.
Last year, the fund gave the event HK$7 million, which is increased to HK$9 million for 2016.
Prudential has supported the tournament since it was launched in 2014 and its decision to continue support provides a measure of stability.

The company has also boosted its support in 2016 for year-round tennis programmes and the Hong Kong Open flagship community campaign.
“We share a similar vision in promoting health and sport to the people of Hong Kong,” Lai said.
“For 2016, we are investing more resources into the community campaigns.
“We are looking forward to bringing another top quality tennis tournament with an exceptional line up of established stars and rising talents to Hong Kong,” added Lai.
Derek Yung, chief executive of Prudential, said: “Our goal remains the same – to inspire people to lead more healthy and active lifestyles.”
