The Yellow River Scenic Area is a good jumping-off point, not only for its beauty but also for the information provided about the history of the river and its role in building Chinese civilisation. The river is wide and wandering yet powerful even after all these centuries as it passes through the centre of the mainland on its way towards the sea.
Check out the region around Chenjiagou village, the birthplace of Chen-style tai chi and a living historical town. It was beset on all sides by bandits for many decades, and the struggle to make a living there helped to create a martial art that has influenced millions of people.
Tai chi as it is today can be viewed at the large school - open to everyone - in the very centre of Chenjiagou. It's worth a visit to this small, dusty village just over an hour outside Zhengzhou, not just for the martial art, but also for the history.
Of course, a trip to Zhengzhou is not complete without visiting the Shaolin Temple, but don't be too focused on the temple itself. The temple is surprisingly small, while the grounds are not nearly as built up as visitors might believe.
Afterwards, climb nearby Song Mountain, and take in the valley, the temple and the countryside below. It then becomes evident why this mountain and its valley became so important to Buddhists and martial artists.
