With its on-premises data center becoming increasingly costly and inflexible, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) set out to migrate to the cloud and establish a more efficient and scalable infrastructure for next-generation services. The company worked with AWS Partner eCloudvalley to transition its core systems to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and modernize its IT environment. As a result, Towngas reduced IT costs by up to 40 percent, cut routine management time by 50 percent, launched services 150 percent faster, and accelerated AI application development to enhance customer experiences and streamline operations.
Removing development hurdles by modernizing on the cloud

As Towngas’ operations diversified, the company sought to modernize its IT systems to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance overhead, and support new digital customer experiences. However, its on-premises infrastructure created bottlenecks that prevented the company from achieving this goal. Its data center lacked the scalability for rapid service development or real-time analytics, and required costly hardware upgrades every few years. “We just weren’t able to create services at the speed businesses are developing today,” says Alex Wong, general manager, corporate information technology at Towngas.

To make its operations more flexible, Towngas set out to modernize its IT infrastructure on the cloud. The cloud offered virtually unlimited scaling for development of cutting-edge analytics and a pay-as-you-go operational model that freed resources for innovation. Crucially, it would also provide a platform for leveraging new technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI, for next-generation applications and customer services. “We always saw cloud as the foundation of our digital transformation strategy and our aim to be an agile business,” comments Alex Wong.

Migrating mission-critical systems with eCloudvalley’s hands-on support

To modernize its IT foundation, Towngas worked with AWS Partner eCloudvalley to migrate mission-critical workloads to AWS and build a resilient, flexible, and secure infrastructure. As an AWS Premier Tier Services Partner with extensive migration and managed service experience, eCloudvalley provided end-to-end support—from initial assessment and architecture design to post-migration optimization and cost governance.

eCloudvalley acted as a dedicated extension of the Towngas IT team. It oversaw round-the-clock monitoring, cost optimization, and regular strategy sessions to align cloud performance with business objectives. The partner helped plan each modernization phase thoughtfully, balancing innovation, security, and cost efficiency while tailoring every solution to fit Towngas’ needs. “eCloudvalley feels like part of our own team,” says Alex Wong. “They’re proactive in every detail—anticipating what we need, optimizing costs, and helping us get the best ROI from our AWS investment.”

eCloudvalley guided Towngas through a structured migration process, helping it transition key systems such as customer-facing applications into Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) environments spanning multiple Availability Zones to achieve 99.99 percent availability. The company adopted Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) R5 Instances for core workloads and moved its application databases to Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) to simplify management and scaling.
To enhance data protection and compliance, eCloudvalley implemented AWS Backup and a multi-VPC business continuity plan, enabling centralized, automated backup across on-premises and cloud environments. Towngas also used eCloudvalley’s cloud management platform, Atlas, to monitor billing information in near real time and set up automated billing alerts—improving visibility and supporting its ongoing cost-optimization strategy.
Following the migration, eCloudvalley helped Towngas establish an Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3)–based data lake integrated with Tableau for business intelligence and analytics. The partner also provided 24/7 managed service support and DevOps advisory, ensuring consistent performance, proactive monitoring, and continued improvement of Towngas’ AWS environment.

“eCloudvalley’s technical expertise and local support gave us confidence to accelerate our modernization journey on AWS,” says Alex Wong. “They bridged our internal knowledge gaps and made cloud operations seamless.”

Outcome

Reducing IT costs by 30–40% and achieving 99.99% availability
The migration reduced IT costs by 30–40 percent and lowered time spent on routine management by 50 percent, while maintaining 99.99 percent availability across business-critical systems. Towngas can now deploy services 150 percent faster, delivering consistent performance and reliability for customers. “Moving to AWS means services are stable, consistent, and evolving at a speed we could never achieve in our data center,” says Alex Wong.

The modernization has also created a strong foundation for AI-driven innovation. Towngas has begun developing next-generation AI services to enhance customer support and streamline operations. For example, the company built a generative AI tool using Amazon Bedrock to help personnel validate customer contracts more quickly and is exploring agentic AI to assist employees in handling complex, multi-stage tasks.

Joe Kwok, country manager at eCloudvalley, says, “eCloudvalley is like an all-around home butler on the cloud—ensuring Towngas’ AWS environments remain spotless, secure, and seamlessly running. Our goal is to help Towngas build lasting cloud maturity by keeping pace with their needs, introducing new AWS capabilities when they’re ready, and continually aligning its strategies with evolving business goals.”
