This year, Grade 12 IBDP student, Himani Vasnani, from the American School Hong Kong (ASHK) nabbed the highly coveted EARCOS 2022 Global Citizenship Award. Moreover, she was also one of 25 students chosen worldwide to join the Take the World Forward Fellowship programme in collaboration with organisations at Harvard and MIT.

“Winning the EARCOS award is great for my university applications and I can use this award to get into other leadership activities, but really, for me winning this award means that I can use this to make positive changes about the issues I am passionate about,” Himani said.

Indeed, that spirit is what makes Himani stand out and one of the many reasons why she was chosen for the award. According to the organisers, the award is presented to students who are proud representatives of their nation who show respect for the diversity of other nations. Candidates must demonstrate an open mind, be well-informed, aware and empathetic, concerned and caring for others and encourages a sense of community. They must also show a strong commitment to engagement and action to make the world a better place.

With such a long list of criteria, winning the award is not easy. However, Himani credits her win to the fact that ASHK has provided a perfect environment for her to explore and grow as a global citizen.

“ASHK gave me the confidence and the freedom to express myself and my thoughts about many issues worldwide, and to have global awareness in order to be a holistic person,” she said.  “ASHK offers a wide variety of ECAs and clubs allowing students to explore their passions and establish strong leadership skills.”
