Insider’s guide to Perth, from sun-kissed beaches and local wines to indigenous art
Most of the action in one of the world’s most remote major cities is to be found in the suburbs – but don’t forget your swimsuit for the beautiful beaches

“The suburbs are where Perth is,” says Max Veenhuyzen, a freelance food journalist who has closely tracked Perth’s food and drinks scene for more than two decades. By day, Veenhuyzen pens stories on the latest in dining, and by night, he’s known to spin records in some of Perth’s happiest venues.
What to do

“Spending time in the suburbs gives you a sense of the place,” says Veenhuyzen, and the first on his list is Fremantle (or Freo), Perth’s working port.
“Make a day of it,” he suggests. “Take the train to Fremantle, and make sure you’re sitting so you can see the ocean.
“Walk around East Freo and have breakfast at Young George [restaurant and bar] on the weekend, or South Fremantle, to admire the old Italian houses and maybe have a swim at the beach. Then head into Freo and get a sandwich at Peggy’s. It’s a young, hip store where they make their own bread.”
Another option for a sunny day is Scarborough Beach. On Sunday afternoons in the warmer months, it is a venue for dance lessons.
