In pictures: Central Market has been serving Hong Kong for almost 170 years

Originally established as a bazaar for locals, the market has evolved with the city around it

Hong Kong’s historic Central Market, which first opened in 1842, has been at its present site since 1858. Plans to sell the site for development were met with a public outcry and the government decided to preserve the market instead and give it a radical makeover reopening the Grade 3 listed building – now full of restaurants and small shops – in 2021.
