In early December, the indignation at Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2025 flooded my feed. I’m not sure what corners of the internet you hang around in, but I couldn’t get away from it. Mocha Mousse underwhelmed, to put it gently. “Man, is it a depressing colour,” wrote one user.

Peta Tomlinson discovers the antidote to Pantone’s downer of a colour – a bright sunshine yellow from Dulux Paints – as she explores home decor trends for 2025. While I’ve always been proudly (and likely, annoyingly) anti-trend, I’m in the process of outfitting my new home so I found ample inspiration while reading. Sculptural furniture and natural fibres here I come.
Ray Yeung has carved a career out of going against the grain. At a time when LGBTQ Asian representation on screen was limited to a handful of stereotypes, the law-major-turned-director bucked the trend to broaden the portrayal of queer Asians in indie films. In our cover feature, Yeung tells Patrick Suen about his journey. Last year saw the release of his latest work, All Shall Be Well, now on my watch list.
I remember sitting in awe at a Cirque du Soleil show in the 1990s. Clowns and elephants this was not. Contemporary circus has come a long way since Barnum and Bailey. Hsiuwen Liu speaks with jugglers Jason Lee and Tito Hung alongside avant-garde theatre performer Kookie Ko Ki-yan, who were part of Tai Kwun’s New Boom in Circus programme. Lee talks about letting go of perfection to improve his art – a lesson we could all take something from.
In Vietnam, Cameron Dueck heads off on one of the most famous motorcycle routes in the world as he speeds through remote back country along the Ho Chi Minh Highway. There’s rain, flat tyres and endless bowls of beef pho. At one point his companion shouts, “I don’t want to die today!” Riveting indeed – though I’m not sure I’ll be renting a motorcycle any time soon.
