Shrimp toast styled as a grand celebratory cake, vintage Cantopop on the speakers, champagne glasses clinking. That was the scene at Magistracy Dining Room and Botanical Garden in Tai Kwun, where we celebrated the launch of PostMag on Wednesday with an evening that brought together Hong Kong’s cultural tastemakers to toast the revamped magazine that was unveiled on September 22.

A buzzy atmosphere pervaded Hong Kong’s former Supreme Court building, restored in 2022 by Black Sheep Restaurants, as guests, including home-grown fashion icon Vivienne Tam (one of the faces behind PostMag’s launch campaign) and actress Bernice Liu, circulated. Other faces in the room spanned industries with restaurateur and wellness guru Lindsay Jang, designer Victoria Tang-Owen, Bowtie Life Insurance co-founder Fred Ngan, Cookie DPT founder Wil Fang and G.O.D. founder Douglas Young all in attendance.

Kevin Huang, chief operating officer of the South China Morning Post (SCMP), and Lee Williamson, executive director of the SCMP’s specialist publications division, kicked off the evening with short speeches.

“Landing on the coffee tables of generations of Hongkongers, Post Magazine has long been known for its trusted, authoritative life coverage in our city. The iconic magazine Hongkongers grew up with is now starting a new chapter,” said Williamson before introducing PostMag’s newly appointed editor, Cat Nelson.

Food designer and creative Alison Tan created a sculpture of bread and shaped butter as well as an edible “sheet-cake” canvas titled Shrimp Toast (it was delicious). Nearby, two art pieces that Claire Yates, co-founder of The Lion Rock Press, had created from past issues of Post Magazines were on display.

Outside on the restaurant’s terrace, Pete Sabine, aka DJ Fabsabs, spun Cantonese wax from the 1980s, 90s and 00s, while Gavin Yeung, our associate editor at PostMag and co-founder of cocktail salon Kinsman, served up two libations based on Cantonese liquors to keep the crowd going late into the night.
