Editorial | Christmas season heralds time to help those in need
Operation Santa Claus depends on the enthusiasm and ever-present generosity of the Hong Kong public

Christmas is coming, and there is every reason to make the most of the festive season, with the good cheer and generosity it brings. The big day is still weeks away, but Hong Kong will soon be bedecked with colourful and innovative decorations, providing a backdrop to a wide range of activities. There will be traditional Christmas trees, reindeer and seasonal markets, but also cutting-edge art installations, light displays and immersive experiences. There is plenty of festive appeal.
This year, the aim is to raise HK$11 million for 13 beneficiaries serving urgent social needs. The areas in which they work include poverty, health and well-being, education, inclusivity and sustainability.
Projects range from the use of rugby to teach underprivileged children life skills to urban farming for isolated senior citizens and help for injured workers and their carers. The organisations backed by the campaign are all making a big difference and are thoroughly deserving of support. Look out for their stories in the coming weeks on RTHK and in the Post.
A citywide drive, featuring a variety of events, will see the community coming together, with corporations, clubs and schools among those playing leading roles. A tennis tournament is already under way, and a five-a-side football competition begins on Sunday.
This year’s theme, “Building Bridges”, is timely and apt. That is what Operation Santa Claus is all about. It has forged connections in the community since its first campaign. It depends on the public-spirited enthusiasm and determination of donors and event organisers. Success is not possible without the generosity of Hong Kong people, which has been ever present across many years.
