From food and medication deliveries to surveillance and emergency rescue, an array of drone projects is ready to take off under the drive of the Hong Kong government.

With the right policy support and regulation, the much-touted benefits of the so-called low-altitude economy are being unleashed.

Among the 38 approved “sandbox” pilot projects are meal deliveries by small unmanned aircraft from the Science Park to Ma On Shan Park across the Tolo Channel in the New Territories starting from next month.

Others include inspection of power cables and transmission towers by CLP Power in designated areas, as well as deliveries of first aid materials overseen by the Fire Services Department.

Also in the pipeline are medication and document delivery services to outlying islands by commercial logistic firms.

The authorities have sensibly restricted the trials to lightweight drones and deliveries, mainly in less densely populated areas.

The trials will help accumulate experience and data to enable the government and relevant departments to map out and devise a comprehensive infrastructure support for the execution of various low-altitude economy activities.
