Editorial | Party rooms in Hong Kong need to remain on the level
Some venues appear to be a new kind of love hotel. Whatever the use, the rooms must function lawfully and ensure guest safety and security

The small size of most Hong Kong flats makes them unsuitable for the hosting of social events. Residents wanting to throw a party usually need to look for an alternative venue.
Party rooms, offering space and entertainment, have long been popular. Such venues vary in size and quality, offering a variety of amenities. Some are big enough to accommodate large gatherings. Others have a theme.
They can be used for events ranging from birthday parties to photo shoots and corporate functions, providing a convenient location for socialising and relaxing.
But there is a need to ensure that party rooms are safe spaces operating within the law.
A Post report has highlighted the growing trend among operators to target couples rather than bigger gatherings. Some advertise that surveillance cameras are either absent or can be switched off, ensuring privacy.
They still offer facilities commonly found in such premises, such as video games, karaoke machines and automated mahjong sets.
