Judge rebukes Trump’s Justice Department over ‘profound’ missteps in Comey case
In an extraordinary move, judge orders grand jury materials be turned over to former FBI chief James Comey’s defence lawyers

A US federal judge said on Monday that potential government misconduct and investigative missteps could be grounds for dismissal of the criminal case against former FBI chief James Comey, a prominent foe of President Donald Trump.
Comey, 64, is one of three vocal Trump critics indicted recently in what has been widely seen as a campaign of retribution against the president’s political opponents.
Comey has pleaded not guilty to charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick, in a blistering 24-page opinion, ordered prosecutors in an extraordinary move to hand over grand jury materials in the case against Comey to his defence team.

“The Court recognises that the relief sought by the defence is rarely granted,” Fitzpatrick said.
