US President Donald Trump escalated his administration’s fight with Harvard University by threatening its tax-exempt status after the school defied the government’s demands to change its policies in exchange for billions of dollars of federal funding.

“Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting “Sickness?” Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!” Trump posted on social media.

The White House said on Tuesday that Trump wants to see Harvard apologise.

“When it comes to Harvard, as I said, the president has been quite clear, they must follow federal law,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters when asked about the threat to the school’s tax-exempt status.

“He also wants to see Harvard apologise, and Harvard should apologise for the egregious antisemitism that took place on their college campus against Jewish-American students,” she added.

Stripping Harvard’s tax-exempt status completely would deal a painful financial blow to the university.
