US President Donald Trump has complained that the United States provided too many weapons to Ukraine under the previous administration, his first public comments on the pause in some shipments as Russia escalates its latest offensive.

Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One for a flight to Iowa on Thursday, Trump said former US president Joe Biden “emptied out our whole country giving them weapons, and we have to make sure that we have enough for ourselves”.

Waves of drone and missile attacks targeted Kyiv overnight into Friday in the largest aerial attack on Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began more than three years ago, killing one person, injuring 23 and inflicting severe damage across multiple districts of the capital in a seven-hour onslaught.

Russia is also intensifying its use of chemical weapons in its war, the Dutch secret service said on Friday. Moscow was using chloropicrin, a chemical that can be lethal in high concentrations and violates the Chemical Weapons Convention, according to the statement.

The Kremlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Russia launched 550 drones and missiles across Ukraine during the night, Ukraine’s air force said on Friday. The majority were Shahed drones, but Russia also launched 11 missiles in the attack.
