Israeli army launches operation at Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital
- Israeli troops target Gaza City hospital in a ‘precise operation’, citing Hamas activity
- More than 31,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the beginning of the war
The Israeli army on Monday launched an operation around Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, and called on Gazans to evacuate the area in and around the facility, with witnesses reporting air strikes on the devastated neighbourhood where it is located.
“In order to maintain your security, you must immediately evacuate the area,” army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on social media platform X, instructing “all those present” to head west and then south to a “humanitarian area”.
Israeli soldiers “are currently conducting a precise operation in the area of the Shifa hospital”, a statement from the military said.
“The operation is based on intelligence information indicating the use of the hospital by senior Hamas terrorists.”
Witnesses in Gaza City told Agence France-Presse they saw tanks surround the hospital site.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians displaced by the war have sought shelter in the complex, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.
