Chinese ⁠Premier ⁠Li Qiang on Monday extended congratulations to Andy Burnham on ‌becoming Britain’s new prime minister.
Strengthening dialogue and cooperation between ⁠China and Britain will benefit ‌the two countries and “inject stability into global ‌peace”, Li said in ⁠his ⁠message, Reuters reported.
“I am willing to ‌work with the prime minister ‌to strengthen exchanges, ‌enhance mutual ‌trust, promote communication and cooperation, ⁠and advance the long-term, ⁠stable comprehensive strategic partnership” between the two countries, ‌Li ‌added.
In his first call to the US president, Burnham assured ⁠Donald Trump that London would be committed to defence and security and would help ‌support the safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Burnham’s office said in a statement on Monday.
“The prime minister … underlined his commitment to ⁠defence and security and said ensuring the ‌security of the UK and its allies was at the top ‌of his agenda,” a Downing ⁠Street spokesperson ⁠said in a readout of the call, ‌which took place soon after Burnham became prime minister.
“The ‌president then ‌updated on the situation in ‌the Middle East and the prime ⁠minister outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the ⁠movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global ‌supply chains ‌and drive down costs for businesses and families across the country.”
Later on Monday, Trump said he held a “very good conversation” with Burnham, hailed Washington’s “outstanding relationship” with the UK and said the leaders would meet soon.
“The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.S.A. will be there to help!” Trump posted on his Truth Social account.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also congratulated Burnham, saying he was encouraged by the Labour leader’s pledge to provide “steadfast” support.
“I truly appreciate that the support for Ukraine and our people will remain steadfast,” Zelensky wrote in a post on social media, after Burnham said earlier he would back the Ukrainian leader “100 per cent”.
French President Emmanuel Macron urged Burnham to strengthen ties with the European Union.
“In the face of the challenges that unite us, I hope that we will deepen our relationship in the service of our peoples and give new momentum to the partnership between the United Kingdom and the European Union,” Macron said on social media.
German Chancellor ‌Friedrich Merz said ‌Burnham ‌is ‌invited ‌to ⁠visit Berlin soon.
Burnham and ‌European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed ⁠their teams should ‌work closely towards holding a ⁠UK-EU summit ⁠later in ‌the year, Burnham’s ‌office ‌said.
On Sunday, thousands of pro-Palestine protesters descended on central London for a march calling on Burnham to take a hard line on Israel.
On Monday, however, one of Burnham’s biggest tasks was to appoint a cabinet.

Several senior members of outgoing prime minister Keir Starmer’s team posted messages on social media saying they had been fired, including deputy prime minister David Lammy and treasury chief Rachel Reeves, the architect of many of Starmer’s economic plans.
Former ‌defence minister John Healey was named ‌as Reeves’ replacement and Ed Miliband has been named foreign minister. Shabana Mahmood, meanwhile, was reappointed as home secretary.
Mahmood tweeted that it was “an honour to remain as Home Secretary”, adding: “I may be biased, but it’s the best job in the business.”
Healey, 66, helped to ⁠trigger the departure of Starmer by ⁠accusing him of failing to spend enough money on keeping the country safe.
Widely liked by colleagues, Healey will now have to find more money to spend ‌on defence while also investing in other key areas such as health and welfare.
Former health chief Wes Streeting was named defence secretary on Monday and Burnham has brought back ⁠Jonathan Reynolds ‌as business ‌minister and Angela Rayner ⁠as ⁠housing ‌minister, ‌according ‌to ‌the prime minister’s ⁠office.
Streeting, who quit the health job in May saying he had lost confidence in Starmer, had intended to challenge Burnham for the Labour leadership before backing down.
