A positive case of Ebola virus has been identified in France in a doctor travelling back from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the French Ministry of Health said Wednesday.
The individual, who has not been identified, returned from a humanitarian mission in one of the virus transmission zones in the DR Congo and was taken into care at a specialised facility in France.
The person is in stable condition, the ministry said.
The Congolese health ministry said on Wednesday there are 1,094 confirmed cases of Ebola, including 277 confirmed deaths.
The Ebola outbreak caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which has no vaccines or treatment, has been the worst ever in terms of case numbers in its first month.
Officials admit there could be far more cases they don’t know about and the peak of the outbreak, which was declared on May 15, could still lie ahead.




All precautionary measures, including the patient’s isolation, were taken upon arrival in France, the health ministry said, adding that their transfer to a hospital was carried out under secure conditions to prevent any risk of contamination.
“An in-depth epidemiological investigation is under way to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient,” the ministry said, adding that a regional health agency will closely monitor them during a 21-day home isolation.
The ⁠Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo is still outpacing response efforts and frontline health workers there face very risky conditions, World Health Organization officials said on Wednesday.
The outbreak has infected over 1,000 people in DR Congo and ‌20 in neighbouring Uganda, reaching the highest first-month total of any episode of the disease.
“Despite the good progress we have made, we still face major challenges, and the outbreak is continuing to outpace the response,” World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a ⁠press conference from the organisation’s headquarters in Geneva that was broadcast online.
The WHO’s Abdirahman Mahamud said ‌health workers continued to face “abduction threats, crimes and being in the wrong place at the wrong time”, citing seven incidents in which they had been targeted.
Local people are ‌often deeply distrustful of officialdom and outsiders in a region scarred by decades of ⁠war.
They also resent ⁠not being allowed to bury loved ones, in accordance with local traditions, due to precautions taken to keep the virus from ‌spreading.
Some are convinced that Ebola is a hoax.
Contact-tracing has been complicated by the fact that the epicentre of ‌the outbreak in DR Congo’s Ituri province is a mining area, where many young men from different parts ⁠of the country come to work.
Those mine workers do not always have close contact with the local community, ⁠so it can be hard to trace people they have been in touch with, while some return home and inadvertently spread the virus to new areas, another WHO official said.
The global risk, though, “remains low” from the Ebola outbreak, the WHO chief said on Wednesday, after the France case was confirmed.
It was “a reminder of the risks faced by frontline responders”, Dr Tedros said, stressing that the “risk to the rest of the world remains low”.
