2. US study finds China’s tech innovation ‘much stronger’ than understood

Can China innovate and outcompete the US in their pitched battle for technological supremacy? A 20-month investigation into the innovation performance of 44 Chinese firms across key technologies – including nuclear power, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles and materials science – revealed a troubling yes for the US.

3. US, Chinese troops taking part in joint ‘Formosa’ exercise in Brazil

For the first time, American and Chinese troops took part in a joint military exercise led by the Brazilian Armed Forces. Operation Formosa, one of Latin America’s largest military exercises, has been held since 1988. The operation takes place near the city of Formosa, Brazil, and is unrelated to Taiwan, which officially went by the same name in 1895.

4. Chinese-Americans launch group backing Harris-Walz ticket

A group of US politicians and community leaders in September launched ‘Chinese-Americans for Harris-Walz’, the latest in a cascade of affinity groups supporting 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz. “What we have on the ticket are two dragons,” said US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, noting that both Harris and Walz were born in the lunar year of the dragon.

5. US politicians of all stripes see Quad as bulwark against China in Indo-Pacific

Bloodstains, bandages and not-so-veiled calls for violence have turned the 2024 American election into the ugliest one so far, shocking many who look to Washington for global stability and delighting those insisting that the country’s democratic system is a farce. But deep divisions between the country’s two political parties are harder to detect when it comes to one of President Joe Biden’s signature foreign policy initiatives: the Japan-India-Australia-US security dialogue known as the Quad.

6. Biden is blocking ‘second China shock’ with tariffs: US ambassador

America’s top envoy to Beijing said the US will not tolerate a “second China shock” and expressed support for a “global pushback” to surging capacity in China’s electric vehicle (EV) industry and other sectors. Speaking via video link from Beijing in September, US ambassador to China Nicholas Burns called on European allies to jointly address China’s overcapacity issues and support to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

7. Former top aide to New York governor is charged with acting as Chinese agent

A former top aide to New York Governor Kathy Hochul was charged with acting as an undisclosed agent of the Chinese government and laundering millions of dollars for China, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn said in an indictment that also accused several officials in Beijing’s New York City consulate as co-conspirators.
