Former BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis held as part of Jimmy Savile investigation
Former radio DJ Dave Lee Travis was arrested yesterday as part of the police investigation set up in the wake of allegations against his BBC colleague Jimmy Savile, British media reported.
Police said a man in his 60s was being held on suspicion of sexual offences, the fourth arrest in connection with the Savile investigation. He was not officially named by police.
British media said a neighbour of Travis, 67, had visited his wife at their home in Bedfordshire, southeast England, to lend her support while he was being questioned by detectives at a police station.
Travis worked alongside Savile at BBC Radio 1 for 25 years before moving to the broadcaster's World Service network. Last year, Myanmar's pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi said his World Service music request show had helped her to get through more than two decades of house arrest. Travis met Suu Kyi when she visited BBC studios during a visit to Britain in June.
There is no suggestion that any allegations of paedophilia have been made against Travis, although two women have come forward claiming he groped them during the 1970s and '80s. He has denied the allegations.
London's Metropolitan Police are leading a national investigation into hundreds of abuse allegations that have been made against Savile, one of the highest-profile BBC television presenters during the '70s and '80s.
