Gunmen have shot dead two Chinese construction workers in a town in Nigeria's volatile northeast, the latest such killing in the region in recent weeks.

An official of the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Construction Corporation said four of its engineers had arrived at the Benishek site from their base in Damaturu early on Wednesday before the attack.

"It was around 10.30 am, some unknown gunmen trailed them to the yard and opened fire, killing two Chinese engineers," he said.

The official said two of the engineers were killed while the other two fled, and the attackers escaped in a company vehicle.

Last month, gunmen attacked the same yard, killing two police guards, the spokesman said. He said that incident had forced the Chinese workers to relocate to Damaturu, some 70 kilometres from Benishek.

Although no group has yet claimed responsibility, Nigeria's northeast has seen scores of deadly gun and bomb attacks by the Islamist group Boko Haram.
