A father in China has sparked controversy for abandoning his young son on a busy highway as punishment for hitting his older brother during a quarrel.
The man came under the spotlight after a motorcycle travel influencer posted a video of the abandoned youngster, who is thought to be seven or eight years old, online.
It showed a young boy standing alone on the side of No. 219 National Highway in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of northwest China.
The stranded boy even tried to hail a lift, the Southern Metropolis News reported.

When the influencer asked the boy why he had become separated from his family, the child said: “My father has gone off by himself.”
“My older brother said something bad about me and then I hit him. My father became angry with me. He told me to get out of the car,” added the boy.
The influencer called the father’s mobile phone after the boy gave the number to him and asked if he knew his son was stranded.
“I know. His mother is walking back along the road to pick him up,” the father replied, according to the influencer who uses the alias @tanshaoxiaofeiyang on social media.
At the time, a vehicle from the Turpan Court in Xinjiang was patrolling the highway and the boy was handed over to the police.

“His father’s behaviour was very outrageous!” said the influencer.
The boy and his family are from Zhejiang province in eastern China.
His father, surnamed Wang, later apologised to his son on social media.
Wang also defended himself by saying that he only drove on for 1.5km before sending his wife to collect the child.
The boy had walked for just two minutes before being found by the influencer.
Wang went on to explain his decision to leave the boy alone on the highway.
“My younger son often fought with his elder brother. On the day of the incident, I had already given him two verbal warnings. But he still hit his elder brother. I was furious, so I wanted to frighten him.”
On August 17, Wang released a video in which his younger son said he was “fine”.

“Thank you all for your care about me. I am fine. My parents treat me well and we are eating barbecue now,” the boy said as he stood in front of a food stall.
“It was my fault for making my father angry. I often bully my older brother,” said the boy.
The story sparked a heated discussion on mainland social media.
“How absurd he is! Is he the biological father of the kid? If an accident happened, he would regret it for the rest of his life,” one online observer said.
“There are plenty of ways to punish the kid, but he chose a method to place the kid in danger. I am speechless,” said another.
