A Chinese man who used a baby nursing room in a shopping centre for an online meeting is suing the mall for causing his respiratory illness, drawing widespread condemnation on mainland social media.

The man, surnamed Zhang, is a graduate student who worked as an intern at a company in Beijing during the summer break of 2024.

In June, while dining at a shopping centre, he received a work notification and went to a baby nursing room and locked himself inside to attend an urgent online meeting.

However, when the meeting ended, he discovered that the lock had malfunctioned and the door could not be opened.

The shopping centre argued in court that the man’s respiratory illness was the result of a pre-existing condition. Photo: Shutterstock

Despite getting immediate assistance from mall staff, he was “trapped” until firefighters were eventually called in to break down the door and rescue him.

Zhang claimed that he experienced difficulty breathing while locked inside and was later diagnosed with a respiratory condition after being sent to hospital.
