Famous Taiwan actress Joe Chen Chiao-en has publicly criticised a well-known mainland Chinese dog trainer and influencer for accidentally causing a dog’s death during a live-stream.
On January 19, Pan Hong, an online influencer with 16.6 million followers who is known as “Pan Hong Loves Playing with Dogs”, faced a backlash after an incident during a live-stream led to the death of a popular Alaskan malamute called Aite while bathing.
Pan operates a dog training facility and offers free services to help owners correct the behaviour of their pets.
Aite was one of the most notable dogs under Pan’s care, and was affectionately referred to as a “star dog” in his training centre.

During the live-stream, viewers noticed troubling signs when Aite resisted the bath and struggled, prompting Pan to tie its mouth with zip ties.
As the dog struggled and gasped for air, Pan slapped it, after which it became motionless.
Although viewers expressed their concerns during the live-streaming session, Pan ignored their warnings and continued the bath before ending the stream.
Public outrage followed and Pan issued an apology, attributing Aite’s death to old age and pre-existing heart problems, adding that the zip tie was necessary to prevent the dog from biting people.

“The blame is on me, so if you want to criticise, direct it at me. To all of Aite’s fans and its original owner, I sincerely apologise. Aite’s life has come to an end, and I will personally handle all follow-up matters privately,” the apology read.
The incident also prompted Chen, a Taiwan actress known for her love of animals, to express outrage on social media on January 20.
“I just witnessed a murder. A life was lost in the name of gaining online traffic. The shock and anger have left me heartbroken all night. I hope those who abuse animals will die in a way a thousand times worse than the animals they hurt. Rest in peace, little dog,” said Chen.
Widely regarded as the Queen of Idol Dramas, Chen is celebrated for her roles in TV series like Fated to Love You and The Prince Who Turns into a Frog.
She has a substantial fan base on the mainland.

Her statement received widespread support from netizens, many of whom praised her for standing against animal abuse and calling out Pan’s behaviour, urging the platform to ban him.
One person said: “Nowadays, idols need to be more than just beautiful and kind-hearted, they also need to speak up for the voiceless. Joe Chen is truly a warm-hearted queen!”
“This so-called dog trainer is just using his profession as a cover for his violent and evil hobby,” said another.
A third online observer added: “His videos are full of violence and disregard for life, and yet he has millions of followers. Platforms are even boosting his content. Imagine the harmful influence this has on young people.”
