A video in which a man “comes out” and announces that his wife is a lesbian to his family during a Lunar New Year’s Eve dinner has unexpectedly gone viral during the holiday season in China.
Posted on January 23 on Bilibili, a popular Chinese video-sharing platform, the video is entitled “38-year-old little uncle comes out in public on New Year’s Eve”.
In the video, which is filmed in a small town in Sichuan province in southwestern China, a man in a white jumper is seen sitting with his two brothers and his sister.
He comes out to his siblings before also revealing that his wife is a lesbian, and that their marriage is a sham.

After the young uncle reveals his true self, one of his brothers says.
“Nowadays, society is moving so fast that sometimes we are afraid we won’t be able to accept it. But now you are the one who has helped us turn a new page!”
The video has received an overwhelmingly positive reaction, with more than 2 million views and numerous positive comments.
“So cute!”, thousands of people typed in the video’s inset bulletin comment box.

“That’s great! A real happy new year!” Another viewer said.
The video poster, a woman in her 20s, later published another video on Bilibili explaining the circumstances surrounding her little uncle’s coming out.
She said that her uncle timed his announcement for this year because he is already in a steady relationship and wants the approval of his family.
The publisher also mentions that their family is large, like a Chinese version of the American sitcom Modern Family, which tells the joyful story of a large American family which also includes a gay brother.

She expressed her surprise at the open-minded and bold attitude of the middle-aged members of her family.
In China, same-sex marriage is not legally recognised, and due to deep-rooted traditional cultural traditions, many middle-aged and elderly Chinese believe that getting married and having children is something that everyone should do.
As a result, most LGBT people choose to hide their true sexuality.
The video has become a topic of discussion among Chinese people online.
In the comments section of the video, many LGBT individuals shared their stories.
One gay man said: “When I went back for Lunar New Year this year, my uncle seemed to notice I was gay and suddenly said, ‘Are you still going to marry a woman?’
“At that moment, I just wanted to run away. I don’t want to be forced to come out because I am not financially independent yet,” the man said.
Another internet observer said: “What a very good family atmosphere. I’ve been out of the closet for four or five years now, and I’m only at the stage where my parents are reluctantly accepting it and not ready to tell the rest of the family.”
