More than 130 flights between Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China and Japan have been cancelled, while 10 high-speed rail services have been suspended as Typhoon Bavi barrels towards China’s east coast.
Hong Kong International Airport’s webpage showed that 64 inbound flights and 71 outbound flights were cancelled on Saturday, with more than half scheduled to travel between the city and Taipei.
Services between Hong Kong and Kaohsiung, Shanghai and Hangzhou were cancelled, while a handful of flights to Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya were also axed.
Local carriers affected included Cathay Pacific Airways and its budget arm HK Express, as well as Hong Kong Airlines and Greater Bay Airlines.
Taiwanese and mainland carriers such as EVA Air, China Airlines, Juneyao Air, Loong Air and China Eastern Airlines also announced cancellations.
Meanwhile, the MTR Corporation said 10 high-speed rail trips connecting Hong Kong with the mainland had been cancelled, including services between West Kowloon station and Shanghai, Fuzhou, and Guangzhou.
Eight other high-speed rail trips scheduled for Sunday were also cancelled.
Bavi, named after a mountain range in Vietnam, pummelled Japan’s southern islands and Taiwan en route towards the mainland’s east coast.


The Hong Kong Observatory said the storm was situated about 240km (149 miles) east-southeast of Wenzhou as of 4pm and was forecast to move northwest at about 30km/h (18.6mph) towards Zhejiang province.
The storm’s outer subsiding air brought extremely hot weather to Guangdong province and surrounding areas, with temperatures across many parts of Hong Kong rising above 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) on Saturday.
At the Observatory’s headquarters in Tsim Sha Tsui, the temperature climbed to 34.2 degrees at around 3.30pm, while Sheung Shui, Tai Lung, Ta Kwu Ling and Sha Tin all recorded readings higher than 36 degrees.
A “very hot weather warning”, issued at 11am, remained in force as of 4.30pm.
Bavi battered Taiwan on Saturday, injuring at least 36 people and forcing more than 14,000 people to evacuate, while leaving over 150,000 households without power.
The storm intensified overnight, prompting mainland authorities to step up emergency preparations before its expected landfall.
In its 10am bulletin, the mainland’s National Meteorological Centre kept an orange typhoon warning in place, while upgrading the rainstorm alert to red – the highest level in the four-tier system and the first such warning this year.
