Man injured after lithium battery catches fire on Hong Kong bus

A man was injured on Thursday evening after a lithium battery he was carrying caught fire on a Hong Kong bus in Tsuen Wan, filling the vehicle with thick smoke.

Police received a report at 7.21pm about the fire on the bus travelling on Citybus route E21, which was heading along Tsuen Wan Road towards Kowloon at the time.

Smoke suddenly erupted in the front section of the upper deck as the vehicle passed Chun Shing Factory Estate in Kwai Chung.

Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after and deployed a water jet and a breathing apparatus team to combat the blaze. The fire was extinguished by 7.37pm.

Police said the male passenger suffered injuries to his thighs.

Photos circulating online show that the fire left the upper deck of the bus heavily charred and blackened, and its windows shattered.
