A ride-hailing service provider has permanently blocked a driver’s account after it was found to have been illegally used by another man in a case investigated by police.

The case came to light on Monday when a passenger filmed his ride-hailing experience, with his driver admitting that he did not hold a Hong Kong identity card, suggesting he was not permitted to work in the city.

The trip was arranged by a service provider, Universe Call, for the Amap ride-hailing platform.

Universe Call said on Wednesday that the account had been “misappropriated”, adding that it had subsequently blocked it for good. It also vowed to follow Hong Kong laws and said it had zero tolerance for illegal labour.

“The driver [in the clip] admitted misappropriating another person’s account and claimed that a boss had referred him in the case, but he refused to name the individual,” it said.

Universe Call said the man’s behaviour violated both its driver’s agreement and the Theft Ordinance, without elaborating.
