Hong Kong police have arrested the driver of a double-decker bus that smashed into barriers on a highway on Thursday, with 21 passengers taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said the Citybus vehicle was travelling along West Kowloon Highway towards the airport when it crashed at a slip road near Hoi Lai Estate in Cheung Sha Wan at around 12.28pm.

The 23-year-old male driver, as well as nine male and 12 female passengers, aged 10 to 72, sustained minor injuries.

They were taken to Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung and Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po. One of the injured was listed as being in a serious condition.

The 23-year-old, who was arrested for dangerous driving, was later released and must report back to police next month.
