Hong Kong’s Cross-Harbour Tunnel was partially shut for more than an hour for emergency repairs after a piece of concrete fell from the ceiling and hit a car.

Police said on Tuesday that it received a call from a driver involved in the accident at 1.06pm.

The concrete slab which hit the driver’s car as it was travelling through the tunnel measured about 50cm by 50cm.

The Hong Kong Island-bound fast lane was subsequently closed for emergency repair works, leading to congestion. It was reopened to traffic at 2.48pm.

No injuries were reported, according to police.

A spokesman for the Highways Department said on Tuesday night that preliminary inspections showed that protective coating and concrete had fallen from one of the cross beams, with the part measuring about 25cm (9.8 inches) long, 35cm wide and 4cm thick.
