A Hong Kong tour guide died after being thrown from a coach that crashed in bad weather on a Shanghai highway heading to the airport on Friday.
Sixteen tour group members also aboard the bus escaped the crash unharmed, according to trip organiser Miramar Travel, although Shanghai police said two passengers sustained minor abrasions.
Shanghai police said on Weibo the weather was bad at the time of the crash.
“Because of slippery road conditions due to rainy weather, there was an accident near Shanghai Pudong International Airport,” the post read.
“At about 2.20pm, a tourist coach heading towards the airport was involved in an accident as the driver lost control of the vehicle amid rainy weather and crashed into the road barrier.”
It said the accident took place on a section of the S32 highway.
“One passenger was killed after being ejected from the vehicle. Two other passengers sustained minor abrasion injuries,” police said.
In another post earlier in the day, police said the driver was 53 years old.
Alex Lee Chun-ting, Miramar Travel’s general manager, said on Friday night a staff member would accompany a relative of the deceased tour guide to Shanghai to handle arrangements for the body.
“There is only one relative of the tour guide who could make their way to Shanghai, but their home return permit has expired, so the Immigration Department is helping us in this regard,” Lee said.
He also said the tour group members were in a state of shock but still wanted to fly back to Hong Kong, with two of them requesting a hospital check-up. They were released shortly afterwards.
All 16 members returned to Hong Kong in the evening, according to Lee.
The director added that to his knowledge, no one had been arrested in relation to the accident.
Lee said he did not know all the circumstances of the accident yet. The company would have to wait for information from the coach driver, a tour guide in Shanghai and government personnel, he added.
Lee declined to provide details about the tour guide, citing privacy concerns but described him as “rather experienced”.
A spokesman for the Immigration Department said it had contacted the Travel Industry Authority and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai for more information.
“[The department] has also been in touch with the relevant travel agency and the family of the victim and will offer due advice and render practical assistance,” he said.
A spokesman for the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau said it was “deeply saddened” by the accident.
“We understand that the travel agency has reported the incident to the Travel Industry Authority,” he said. “The authority will closely follow up with the travel agency to take care of the affected tour members and provide all possible assistance to the family of the deceased tour guide.”
