New link cuts travel time from Hong Kong to Jiangmen to just 90 minutes
Huangmaohai Cross-sea Passage, a western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, predicted to increase flow of goods in Greater Bay Area
The Huangmaohai Cross-sea Passage, a western extension of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, runs about 31km (19 miles) from Gaolan Port in Zhuhai to Doushan in Jiangmen in the Pearl River Delta, with the section spanning the sea stretching nearly 14km.
The new link opened at 3pm on Wednesday, allowing Hongkongers to reach Jiangmen in just 1½ hours.
Stanley Chiang Chi-wai, chairman of the Lok Ma Chau China-Hong Kong Freight Association, said the new bridge was a boon for truck drivers hauling construction modules assembled in Jiangmen as they no longer needed to make detours.
“Drivers often receive orders from Jiangmen transporting Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) to Hong Kong. The new link will provide a faster and more direct route from Jiangmen to Zhuhai before reaching the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge,” Chiang said. “And we foresee such orders will increase due to the ongoing infrastructure projects in Hong Kong.”
The Huangmaohai passage is the third national-level cross-sea infrastructure project in the bay area, following the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge that opened in 2018 and the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link that launched in June.
