Hong Kong’s first astronaut, Lai Ka-ying, will deliver a live lecture from space to students and teachers at her alma mater on Wednesday morning, with the session also to be broadcast to pupils across the city and neighbouring Macau.
According to an Education Bureau notice sent to all primary and secondary schools on Tuesday, Lai and her two fellow Shenzhou-23 crew members – mission commander Colonel Zhu Yangzhu and Zhang Zhiyuan – will take part in the “Tiangong Class” at Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College.
The 1½-hour event, which will begin at 9.50am, will also be attended by representatives of the youth sector and innovation and technology community. A delegation from Macau will visit Hong Kong to attend the lecture in person.
The government said it encouraged primary and secondary school teachers and students to watch the broadcast on campus.
The event will also be streamed live on the Information Services Department’s website and Facebook page, as well as on local television channels.
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong and Macau governments and the China Manned Space Agency, the event will feature an expert lecture, in-orbit demonstrations and a question-and-answer session designed to showcase the space environment.

The notice said the “rare dialogue between space and Earth” would be a valuable aerospace science education activity that could enhance students’ knowledge and stimulate their interest in learning.
It added that the session would help build students’ aspirations, encourage them to be daring in their exploration, further cultivate their patriotism and strengthen their sense of national identity.


The mission carrying Lai was launched in May. The 43-year-old police superintendent and mother of three is serving as the mission’s payload specialist.
She is expected to help conduct more than 100 scientific studies aboard Tiangong, ranging from biomedical experiments involving mice and artificial embryos to materials testing and new energy-storage systems.
One crew member will remain in orbit for a year to study the long-term effects of space flight on astronauts’ health and improve in-orbit medical support, while the other two are scheduled to return in November.
