Hong Kong cancelled all storm warnings at 7.10pm on Sunday as Typhoon Noul moved away from the city, with airport operations resuming after roughly 360 flights were grounded.
The weather will remain unsettled on Monday, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
“Under the influence of an active southwesterly airstream to the south of Noul, there will be showers and squally thunderstorms over Hong Kong tonight and at first tomorrow. Showers will be heavy at times,” the forecaster said on Sunday evening.
Yeung Tat-wing, the Airport Authority’s director of service delivery, said the airport expected to handle a total of 675 flights on Sunday.
According to the authority, about 360 flights were cancelled on Sunday and 50 on Saturday.
“Most flights will resume in the afternoon,” he said.




Yeung added that the airport would be busy, especially in the evening, with all three runways operating overnight if necessary.
He said he hoped operations would return to normal by Monday morning.
According to the Observatory, Noul intensified into a severe typhoon at 2am on Sunday before weakening back to typhoon strength by 5am and dropping to a severe tropical storm by 11am as it moved inland.
The storm made landfall on the coast of Huizhou at around 3.50am, with maximum sustained winds near its centre reaching around 155km/h (96mph), making it the first typhoon to hit Guangdong province this year.
The Observatory first issued a No 8 warning at 10.10pm on Saturday and raised it to No 9 at 1.10am the next day.
It remained in force for six hours before being lowered to No 8 at 7.10am on Sunday. It was then downgraded to No 3 at 12.40pm, No 1 at 3.20pm before it was cancelled at 7.10pm.


More than 140mm (5.5 inches) of rainfall was recorded over parts of eastern New Territories on Sunday morning, the forecaster said.
The Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning – the lowest level in a three-tier system – at 5am.
The signal was cancelled at 10.05am, but was reissued at 3.45pm. The second signal was cancelled at 6.45pm.
The Hospital Authority said that, as of 12pm, 21 people sought medical treatment at public hospitals due to storm-related injuries.
As of 1pm on Sunday, the government’s 1823 call centre had received 88 reports of fallen trees while the Fire Services Department had received 243 reports.

The Auxiliary Medical Service said it deployed more than 200 of its staff during the typhoon and handled over 60 injured people.
The Drainage Services Department said it had received eight reports of flooding. Meanwhile, 246 people had stayed at 29 temporary government shelters opened in various districts.
CLP Power said on social media that strong winds and fallen trees had damaged overhead lines and equipment.
About 30 customers, mostly in Sheung Shui and Yuen Long were affected by power outages, but supply was restored at 5.40pm, the firm said.
Most MTR lines resumed operations in the morning, with the East Rail line continuing service later in the afternoon.
Bus and ferry services also resumed gradually from around 1pm.

The MTR Corporation had said that it was notified by mainland Chinese railway authorities that all high-speed rail trips between Hong Kong’s West Kowloon station and mainland destinations before 4pm on Sunday would be cancelled.
According to its website, 194 cross-border train services were cancelled on Sunday, as well as six on Monday.
The Education Bureau said all classes of all-day schools had been suspended on Sunday. It said in the afternoon that evening school classes would resume at night.

The typhoon name Noul, provided by North Korea, means “glowing crimson skies”.
In Sha Tin, a 21-year-old man was rescued after falling into the Shing Mun River in the early hours of Sunday.
The police received a report at 5.20am stating that the man had slipped into the water while “watching the rain”.
A quick-thinking passerby threw a fire hose down to the man, allowing him to climb ashore. He was transported to the hospital conscious and uninjured.
Across the city, many residents spent a sleepless night as the typhoon intensified beyond expectations. Violent gusts howled and wailed, rattling windows and slamming buildings, leaving households wide awake through the early hours.
“Just as I was about to fall asleep, I heard extremely strong winds, and what I think might have been impact sounds,” one social media user said. “My heart skipped a beat, and I was awake again. It was a constant cycle the whole night.”
Others said they had not heard winds roar with such force in years and that they had underestimated Noul’s intensity.
“In all my years, I do not think I have ever experienced wind making such loud slapping sounds, whistling like a flute and howling – it was scarier than a movie scene,” another resident wrote.




An online video shared by a Yuen Long resident, filmed from their flat window at around 6am, shows trees below swaying violently as the wind howled.
The resident described the gusts as “demon winds”, with the footage capturing an eerie, high-pitched sound that compared with the rise and fall of a siren’s wail.
Another video filmed at around 5.40am from outside a flat shows balcony doors rattling violently in the wind, with the resident describing the noise as sounding similar to debris being swept along the street by the powerful gusts.
Compared with other recent typhoons in Hong Kong, Noul was relatively mild, despite being the third-closest major storm to approach the city since 2000, passing within 80 km – behind Saola at 40 km, and Hato and Wipha at 60 km.
By contrast, Super Typhoon Ragasa in 2025 packed wind speeds exceeding 200 km/h, triggered a No 10 signal, injured over 100 people, and grounded 600 flights despite staying further away at 100 km.
