Purrs of approval for Yau Ma Tei cat mural as community art project draws crowds
Artist Li Hok-fung’s mural on Nathan Road is part of art initiative using cat-themed works to enliven neighbourhoods and connect residents
On the weathered facade of the Kiu Kong Mansion on Nathan Road, two freshly painted cats now curl into the bustle of Hong Kong’s Yau Ma Tei.
The mural features a ragdoll and a British shorthair cat, two breeds loved by Hongkongers, bringing a burst of colour and whimsy to the ageing building.
With its head wrapped in a pink towel after a grooming session, the ragdoll gazes out at the street while the British shorthair shows off glossy nails and long, curly eyelashes, both perched in a garden filled with blooming roses.
Seasoned painter Li Hok-fung began the artwork on February 20, bringing an artistic touch to the neighbourhood.
Before he picked up his brushes, the drawing was projected onto the exterior wall so he could trace the outlines, then slowly build up the layers of colour, he explained.
The painting had become an attraction in the community, with passers-by constantly stopping to take photos and offer words of appreciation – a response that far exceeded his expectations, he said.
