A Hong Kong dancer paralysed from the neck down in an accident during a concert by popular local boy band Mirror is set to undergo a more intense rehabilitation programme, his father has revealed, calling for more financial support.
Mo Li Kai-yin, 31, would embark on a three-year rehabilitation journey powered by advanced technologies, including regenerative medicine and an implantable microstimulator, his father, Reverend Derek Li Shing-lam, revealed in a prayer letter.
“It is a thorny path we have never walked before, one that may be filled with unknown ups and downs and trials,” the father said.
“Yet, the destination points towards a precious, glimmering goal: achieving a limited degree of self-care and quietly gathering every ounce of strength in the years to come, waiting with hope to break through the limitations of life, bit by bit.”
It was the 174th such letter since Mo Li was crushed by a falling four-by-four-metre screen 3½ years ago. The 500kg (1,102lbs) LED panel fell from the ceiling of the Hong Kong Coliseum during a Mirror concert in July 2022, leaving the dancer at risk of permanent paralysis.
Investigations revealed that the main contractor misreported the weights of the equipment and components.
The letter on Saturday evening said the coming rehabilitation programme would be more “intense and in-depth”.
“While only a select few are able to receive cutting-edge treatments such as regenerative medicine and implantable microstimulators, he has seized this rare opportunity,” the letter said.
“Through his unwavering effort, he has allowed the medical team to see a glimmer of hope – that there remains a chance for him to reach the shores of recovery.”
Reverend Li also implied that more financial donations would be required to support the dancer’s recovery.
“May the Lord of abundance personally provide and touch the hearts of those willing to lend a helping hand, accompanying Mo on this journey that demands both perseverance and support,” he said.
Regenerative medicine seeks to replace, repair or “regenerate” cells, tissues and organs to restore normal function lost due to disease, injury or ageing. Implantable microstimulators are miniaturised “smart” devices designed to interact with the body.
Financial uncertainties surrounding Mo Li’s recovery path came to light in September last year, when his father disclosed that a major donor’s verbal commitment to cover his medical expenses might no longer prevail.
Without naming the donor, his father said back then that although the family had managed to find a path for cutting-edge technology, sufficient resources would still be required to truly move the process forward.
Two months after the accident, billionaire Richard Li Tzar-kai, chairman of PCCW and parent company of concert organiser MakerVille, said he would provide HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) to support the dancer in addition to covering medical fees.
But the family turned down the offer as MakerVille and the other organiser, Music Nation, had promised to settle medical expenses.
In July 2025, the dancer sued 12 parties, including the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, a contractor it hired and Studiodanz, Li’s employer at the time of the accident, for alleged negligence and breach of duty of care, claiming an undisclosed amount in compensation.
In a separate lawsuit, the District Court in late December ordered a trial to determine Studiodanz’s compensation for Li’s injury under the Employees’ Compensation Ordinance.
