Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao is winding up its operations in Canada by the end of this month, marking the closure of all newsrooms run by the city’s major print publications in the North American country.
Employees working for the Toronto and Vancouver editions of Ming Pao Newspapers (Canada) were notified of the decision on Monday via termination letters sent by the parent company in Hong Kong.
Ming Pao Canada reported in its video daily news that its final day of operations would be January 31, with the print editions in Toronto and Vancouver scheduled to cease publication on January 17.
“Staff in Canada were informed by management that the decision to cease operations and halt publication was made by the Hong Kong headquarters,” it said.
Ming Pao Canada was the country’s only remaining daily Chinese-language print newspaper based in Hong Kong, after the closure of the Sing Tao Daily Canadian edition in August 2022.

Ming Pao’s print editions in Toronto and Vancouver were both established in 1993.
The Post has contacted Media Chinese International, the parent company of the Canadian outlet, for comment.
According to its annual report, the company reported a 19.3 per cent decline in North America turnover for the financial year ended March 31, 2025, with revenue shrinking from US$7.11 million to US$5.74 million.
During the period, the North American publishing segment incurred a pre-tax loss of US$2.85 million.
According to a letter from Ming Pao Canada to the British Columbia Labour Ministry, seen by The Canadian Press, the business was being permanently closed “for financial reasons” with 60 employees terminated. However, the letter did not specify the headcount breakdown between the Vancouver and Toronto offices.
