Hong Kong on Friday experienced its coldest morning so far this winter, with temperatures dropping to 12.9 degrees Celsius (55.22 Fahrenheit).
The Observatory said the city’s first cold weather warning of the season had remained in force for the first working day of 2026. The warning was originally issued at 4.20pm on Thursday.
“Temperatures over many areas fell to 12 degrees or below this morning, four to five degrees lower than those on Thursday,” a spokesman said.
The forecaster said that Friday’s weather would be mainly fine and dry, with daytime highs reaching around 18 degrees.
As of 8am, temperatures in King’s Park, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, Cheung Chau, Chek Lap Kok, Sai Kung, Kowloon City, Wong Tai Sin, Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po and Yuen Long Park were around 12 degrees.
“It will remain cold on Saturday morning. The temperature difference between day and night will be relatively large,” the Observatory said.
The forecaster added that temperatures were likely to rise slightly across the region next week, but the mornings would remain cool.
It also noted that no cold weather warning was issued last winter, describing last December as “unseasonably mild”.
