The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No 1 warning signal on Monday due to Super Typhoon Fung-wong, while temperatures are expected to drop to around 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) by midweek.
The forecaster said the storm would continue moving towards Luzon in the Philippines before entering the South China Sea on Monday and track northwards towards the vicinity of Taiwan.
The Observatory said it would issue the No 1 signal some time after noon on Monday.




“It will be closest to Hong Kong on Wednesday, skirting about 400km east of Hong Kong,” the forecaster said on Sunday. “Local winds will strengthen later on Tuesday and Wednesday.”
Fung-wong means “phoenix” in Cantonese and is the name for Hong Kong’s Lantau Peak.
The storm was located about 1,270km (790 miles) southeast of Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon. It was upgraded to a super typhoon as it approached the Philippines and was expected to make landfall on Sunday evening.
Under the combined effect of Fung-wong and the monsoon, the forecaster said it would be windy, with swells and slightly cooler conditions over the coast of Guangdong over the next few days.
Temperatures are expected to fall to around 20 degrees in urban areas of the city by midweek.
The forecaster added that depending on local wind conditions, it would assess the need to issue a higher warning signal on Tuesday.

Observatory scientific officer Cindy Lam Sam-yi said that issuing a typhoon warning signal this late in the year was not a “rare case”.
Lam said that according to Observatory statistics, the record for the latest the forecaster issued a storm warning was December 20, 2021, which was triggered by Super Typhoon Rai.
She added that in recent years there had been other cases where approaching storms resulted in the Observatory issuing warning signals in November and December.
Fung-wong is expected to pass near Taiwan and gradually weaken under the influence of a northeast monsoon later in the week.
Hong Kong was hot and dry on Sunday, with temperatures expected to peak at around 29 degrees.
Temperatures are forecast to range between 22 and 27 degrees on Monday, and gradually fall until about Thursday. The weather will be mainly cloudy for most of the week.
