Hong Kong marks National Day with festivities, fireworks – as it happened

Hong Kong has marked National Day with a range of activities to celebrate the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu delivered a speech at a reception at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai on Wednesday morning, with local and central government officials as well as leading business figures in attendance.
The restaurant sector is hoping to benefit from an up to 20 per cent increase in business, with more tourists expected to cross the border into the city during mainland China’s “golden week” holiday from October 1 to 8.
A spectacular 23-minute fireworks display attracted more than 344,000 spectators on both sides of Victoria Harbour on Wednesday evening.
