Ten elderly people were injured after they fell down an escalator like dominoes at a shopping centre in Hong Kong on Sunday when one of them stumbled.

According to witnesses, the group of elderly people had just finished lunch on the third floor of Kings Wing Plaza 2 in Shek Mun, Sha Tin, at 2pm and were taking the escalator to the second floor when a man lost his footing.

He fell backwards, causing nine other women to topple over.

They sustained minor injuries and were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin for treatment.

Most were carried on stretchers, while others arrived in wheelchairs. Several had head wounds requiring bandaging.

Police cordoned off the area and the escalator was halted pending an inspection by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.
