Hong Kong’s affluent Repulse Bay neighbourhood has been hit by a power outage, leaving 230 households without electricity for five hours after a high-voltage cable was damaged.

A spokesman from HK Electric, which serves Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island, said an 11-kilovolt high-voltage cable was suspected to be damaged by a third-party construction project at around 2.35pm on Tuesday.

“This incident affected several substations on Repulse Bay Road, cutting off power to over 230 customers in the area,” he said.

The power company added that it immediately dispatched engineers to the scene and also sent a few mobile generator vehicles to help restore power as quickly as possible.

HK Electric said it began providing temporary electricity supply to affected customers at 5.42pm and had successfully restored temporary power to most of them by 7.30pm.

“Engineers are currently working to connect temporary power to the remaining few affected customers as soon as possible. HK Electric apologises to those impacted by the incident and will investigate the cause,” the spokesman said.
