Hong Kong can expect to see rainy and unsettled weather next week, but the city is unlikely to be directly affected by three tropical cyclones that have formed in the Pacific.
The Observatory said on Saturday that showers would increase on Monday and Tuesday.
“The weather will be very hot over Guangdong [on Sunday], showers triggered by high temperatures will affect the region,” the forecaster said.
Temperatures hit as high as 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) on Saturday.
“Under the influence of an active southwesterly airstream, the weather will remain unsettled over the coast of southern China in the middle and latter parts of next week,” the forecaster said.
It said the increased showers early next week were due to the northward movement of a monsoon gyre, a large-scale cyclonic circulation, and a broad trough of low pressure affecting the coast of southern China.
The forecaster earlier said the gyre had formed in the northwest Pacific in the past two days, leading to the development of the three tropical cyclones.
But the trio – Francisco, Co-May and Krosa – would not directly impact the city, the forecaster said.


Francisco is a male name used by the Chamorro people and is derived from the Latin term for “free man”. Co-May is a species of grass in Vietnamese and Krosa means crane in Cambodian.
The Observatory said Francisco and Co-May would weaken and merge into a larger area of low pressure. But there was a small chance they would turn into a new tropical cyclone.
“Francisco, which is currently in the East China Sea, is expected to move towards the southeastern coast of China and gradually weaken,” the Observatory wrote on its blog.
“Co-May, currently near the northern part of Luzon, will cross the waters east of Taiwan and move towards the Ryukyu Islands, also gradually weakening.
“Krosa, over 2,000km [1,243 miles] away near Guam, will move northwards across the northwest Pacific, and spend the rest of its life over the vast ocean.”
Hong Kong was battered last weekend by Typhoon Wipha which triggered the highest-level No 10 warning signal, injuring dozens of people, toppling hundreds of trees and leaving tens of thousands of air travellers stranded.
