Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has said the No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force until at least noon on Saturday and it will assess whether a higher warning is needed.

The Observatory said on Friday evening that a tropical cyclone was expected to be nearest to the Pearl River Delta between Saturday and Sunday morning. It was expected to stay in the northeast of the South China Sea and continue to intensify, the forecaster said.

“Depending on the track of the tropical cyclone, its speed of intensification and the distance between its associated strong winds and the Pearl River [Delta], the Observatory will assess the need for issuing higher tropical cyclone warning signals later tomorrow and at first on Sunday,” the forecaster said.

The Observatory issued the No 1 signal at 12.20pm on Friday.

It urged the public to avoid water sports and stay away from the shoreline over the weekend in the wake of swells.
