Vocational Training Council’s Alaina Shum to lead Hong Kong’s consumer watchdog
Shum set to start new role in August, succeeding Gilly Wong, who led watchdog for 13 years
A senior management member of Hong Kong’s largest vocational training provider with extensive experience in the logistics sector has been named the new chief executive of the consumer watchdog.
Shum is currently a chartered fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong, with more than 30 years of managerial experience in various industries in the city and the Asia-Pacific region, including aviation when she worked at the Airport Authority.
She is the deputy executive director of the Vocational Training Council, responsible for formulating mainland Chinese and international development strategy.
“Shum is well-versed in the mission, governance and operations of statutory bodies, with exceptional leadership abilities in strategic development, regulatory compliance and stakeholder engagement, both on mainland and international affairs,” council chairman Clement Chan Kam-wing said as he announced Shum’s appointment on Thursday.
He said the appointment was completed after “a meticulous and comprehensive selection process” that followed an open recruitment in December last year.
“We are confident that Shum will bring her wealth of experience to her new role and lead the Consumer Council in keeping up with the ever-evolving market, while fostering effective collaboration and relationships with stakeholders, so as to safeguard the rights and interests of consumers,” he added.
