British group Kaiser Chiefs have said they were pleased to claim a small slice of history at the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens on Sunday by becoming the first rock band to play at Kai Tak Stadium since its March 1 opening.

The five-piece played a five-song set during the rugby tournament’s final day, forming part of a bolstered entertainment line-up for the event and wowing spectators already on a high after the trophy-winning efforts of Hong Kong’s women’s and men’s teams.

It came days before Coldplay play their part in the opening of the city’s newly completed stadium at the HK$30 billion (US$3.9 billion) Kai Tak Sports Park by staging four high-profile concerts there.

However, Kaiser Chiefs told the Post they were happy to play in the “beautiful stadium”, and would lay claim to beating their fellow British group to it.

“I know that next on the menu here is Coldplay officially opening it,” singer Ricky Wilson said. “But we’d like to think that we’re kind of the first band to play it. We’ll take that a little bit.”
