Construction workers protest over unpaid wages at Hong Kong side of mega bridge
About 100 workers claim Jardine Engineering Corporation owes them three to four months’ wages totalling HK$7.6 million

Dozens of construction workers have staged a protest near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, accusing a subsidiary of a major conglomerate of failing to pay outstanding wages.
The workers gathered on Thursday morning at a construction site for a smart car park on the Hong Kong side of the bridge and displayed banners calling for action from Jardine Engineering Corporation.
About 100 workers claimed they were owed three to four months’ wages totalling HK$7.6 million (US$978,000), despite their negotiations with the Jardine Matheson subsidiary and efforts to seek help from the Labour Department.
Jardine Matheson told the Post that the project was a joint venture between Paul Y Engineering Group, China International Marine Containers and Jardine Engineering Corporation.
In a reply to the Post on Friday, Jardine Engineering Corporation said following Paul Y’s provisional liquidation announcement, the project would be managed by the remaining two parties.
It said the companies in the joint venture “acknowledged the workers’ situation” and explained that the issue of payroll would be addressed through established procedures.
