Hong Kong authorities have suspended the water supply from the Kowloon Reservoir following the discovery of a submerged car linked to a 2023 case involving a floating body.

A man spotted the overturned rusty vehicle at the bottom of the reservoir at about 5pm on Saturday, near Kam Shan Tree Walk in Kam Shan Country Park. Oil slicks were also reportedly observed on the water surface.

Firefighters and divers were dispatched to the scene but no one was found inside the vehicle. The Post learned that the car had been covered in silt for some time.

The site was cordoned off by police for investigation on Sunday.

The Water Supplies Department said on Sunday that it had temporarily suspended its use of the reservoir. Comprehensive and strict water quality testing would be carried out before its use would resume, it added.

The department said the supply of drinking water involved multiple procedures, covering areas such as reservoirs, treatment works and the distribution network.
